Turkey’s parliament has approved Finland’s application to join NATO, the Anadolu news agency reported.

Thus, all states of the North Atlantic Alliance have ratified Helsinki’s application. Finland will officially become a NATO member.

Turkey and Hungary were the only alliance members that had long withheld approval of Helsinki’s application to join NATO.

Earlier this week, Hungary’s parliament ratified Finland’s membership in NATO.

NATO member states signed the protocols for Finland and Sweden to join the North Atlantic Alliance on 5 July 2022. Turkey, however, blocked the membership process, demanding that the two Scandinavian countries recognise Kurdish organisations as terrorist, extradite those accused of terrorism, and lift the arms embargo on Ankara.

However, in early March, Ankara announced that it was ready to ratify Finland’s candidacy before the presidential elections to be held in Turkey in May.

In the case of Sweden, Turkey continues to have objections.
