Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is demanding a session of the UN Security Council over Russia’s plans to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus.
Earlier, Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow and Minsk had agreed, without violating international obligations, to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Putin explained that Russia would not transfer its nuclear weapons to Belarus, but would do what the United States has been doing for a decade. According to him, the construction of a storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus will be completed by 1 July.
“We demand that an emergency session of the UN Security Council be convened immediately for this purpose. We call on the states of the ‘Group of Seven’ and the European Union to warn the Belarusian authorities about the long-term consequences if they agree to receive tactical nuclear weapons from Russia on their territory,” the statement posted on the website of Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Ukraine’s foreign policy department called the announcement of the intention to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus a provocative step.
