The ‘Delta’ strain is the main cause of the increase in the number of infections with the ‘Corona’ virus worldwide. This was stated by the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Ghebreyesus, at the opening of the meeting of the Organization’s Emergency Committee.
‘The Delta strain is one of the main causes of the current increase in infections; it is taking advantage of increased social interaction and the movement of people,’ he noted.
According to Ghebreyesus, the increase in vaccination levels in Europe and North America had begun to yield positive results, and the number of deaths had decreased. However, he stated that the situation is now changing again, and the world is ‘on the threshold of a third wave’ of the ‘Corona’ virus.
‘Last week was already the fourth consecutive week during which the number of infections with the ‘Corona’ virus increased worldwide. After ten weeks of declining indicators, the mortality rate has also begun to rise,’ Ghebreyesus stated.
