Turkey may be on the threshold of opening a new page in its relations with Cairo, as well as with the Gulf states. This was stated by Turkish President’s official spokesman Ibrahim Kalın in an interview with Bloomberg, describing Egypt as “the brain and heart of the Arab world.”

“We want to cooperate with Egypt in the Eastern Mediterranean, on Libya and the Palestinian issue, which the world seems to have forgotten,” Kalın explained. “If we can take constructive bilateral steps, that could help stabilise the situation in the region.”

According to him, dialogue could contribute to the development of bilateral and regional relations. “This also applies to the Gulf states. We have no insoluble problems with any Arab country.”

Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had stated that Turkey could sign an agreement with Egypt on the delimitation of maritime borders, depending on the state of bilateral relations.

On Saturday, Defence Minister Hulusi Akar called Egypt’s decision a “very important development in respect for Turkey’s continental shelf in underwater exploration in the Mediterranean.” He added that Turkey and Egypt share historical, cultural and common values.
