Armenian lavash has been included in the list of the world’s 50 best breads. CNN has published an article presenting the world’s 50 best breads, and Armenian lavash ranks second on the list. Armenpress reports this.
“What is bread? You probably don’t need to think long about this question. You want to taste a piece of bread, and in the meantime, what you imagine says a lot about your origins,” the article’s author wrote. In the article, the author recalls the experts’ words that “bread is essentially what your culture speaks about.”
CNN separately presented the national breads of Afghanistan, Brazil, Egypt, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Chile, China, Ethiopia, as well as Armenia and many other countries.
“In Germany’s Westphalia region, bakers bake a few loaves of bread over the course of 24 hours, while Armenian lavash made from wheat flour takes on a beautiful appearance in 30 seconds in the tonir,” the article’s author noted.
In the article, the author presents the process of baking lavash and notes that it is done collectively.
“When your Armenian mother-in-law approaches with bread in hand, don’t be surprised. Lavash is given to newlyweds as a symbol of abundance and prosperity. The process of making lavash requires the participation of friends. While baking this traditional bread, women gather together, prepare the dough, and with a strong strike, attach the thinly and widely rolled dough on a special cushion to the pre-heated tonir,” the article’s author noted, emphasizing that this process requires great skill.
Lavash is an important component of Armenian culture; it is included in UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
