Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has called on the government to immediately halt the judicial reform process in the country. He wrote this on his Twitter page.
The President addressed the leaders of all Knesset factions, both coalition and opposition, urging them to place the interests of the country’s citizens above all else.
“Last night we witnessed very difficult scenes. I appeal to the Prime Minister, the government and members of the coalition. There is great dismay among the people. Security, the economy, society — everything is in danger… For the sake of the unity of the people of Israel, I call for halting the legislative process,” said Herzog.
It is expected that the country’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will announce the suspension of the bill in the coming hours. The Jerusalem Post reported this.
On March 26, thousands of residents of Israel took to the streets to express their discontent with the judicial reforms. The protesters gathered near government buildings and disrupted traffic.
In Jerusalem, citizens managed to break through police barricades and reach the residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
On the same day, the dismissal of the country’s defense minister was announced; he was dismissed for criticizing the judicial reforms.
According to the reform, the parliamentary majority is granted the right to elect the judges of the Supreme Court. The court, in turn, loses the right to overturn government decisions.
