German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who had a telephone conversation with Turkish President Erdogan, called for an “immediate halt” to Turkey’s military offensive in Syria, DW reports, citing the head of the German government.
In Merkel’s view, despite Turkey’s justified interests in its own security sphere, military operations in northeastern Syria lead to the forced displacement of many residents, the destabilization of the region, and the strengthening of the “Islamic State” terrorist group.
The telephone conversation took place at Erdogan’s initiative, a German government spokesman detailed.
