The world has perhaps reached a more dangerous line than at any time since the Cold War, with the situation aggravated by the United States and its allies abandoning diplomacy. This was stated on Monday by Russian Federation Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a meeting of the UN Security Council. The meeting was dedicated to “effective multilateralism through the defence of the principles of the Organisation’s Charter”.
“Again, as in the years of the Cold War, we have approached a dangerous, and perhaps even more dangerous, line. The situation has been aggravated by the loss of faith in multilateralism, when the West’s financial and economic assault destroys the advantages of globalisation, when the United States and its allies renounce diplomacy and demand that relations be settled ‘on the battlefield’. All this is within the walls of the UN, which was created to prevent the horrors of war,” the Minister said.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry called for preserving the goals and principles of the UN Charter and adapting the world organisation to “the objective trends of the formation of a multipolar architecture of international relations”.
According to the Minister, the UN Security Council should include more countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America, whereas at present there is a “overrepresentation of the West”.
